When i hook up my thinkpad to my tv near either an s-video or 15 pin VGA cable, the box beneath Control Panel>Display>Settings that says construct this device your primary monitor is gray and unclickable.

You probably can't make it your primary monitor...The primary monitor on your laptop is the blind it came next to.
You can however display to the TV. With it connected, make sure your tv is surrounded by the right mode. (Probably video mode or something like that.) Then, you can try hitting Function+F8 on your laptop. The function push button is usually blue and may be labeled 'Fn'.
Hitting this button will scroll through the options:
1 - Laptop Monitor solely
2 - Laptop Monitor display and TV display
3 - TV Display only
Just hold on to htting Fn+F8 and it will scroll through these choices. Good luck.

Unplug your monitor after turning tower off, and plug within the video cable to your tv into your pc. Some vid cable are RCA, other are a digital type cable. You need a apecial vid card to do this.After reboot the laptop with one and only one monitor connected.
