when viewing white background eg. webpages it is far too bright (hard on the eyes).
when i reduce the brightness, and contrast, i lose adjectives contrast between the darker colors.
Any suggestions?

Most video cards ship with its own software to fine tune display properties . With Nvidia you can newly right click on the desktop to bring up the client. The program gives a better stock of control options than one built within with WinXP
